A few months back I have a conference in DC on the calendar. Not just any conference, one packed with the exact companies and partners I want in my corner. I know I need a leave behind, something people can walk away holding in their hand, and it needs to be premium. I don't want to phone it in. I want to tackle the hardest problem I know how to solve and put it on paper. The Agile Talent Playbook.

Three Weeks To Write And Print

One catch, I don't have months. I have literally three weeks before I get on a plane. I've self-published before through KDP, and I remember exactly how that goes. You submit, you wait, you wait some more, they finally approve proofs, they mail them to you, then you wait again before it's ready for a real order. And that timeline does not survive contact with three weeks in a plane ticket to DC. I'm doing the math out loud in my head, and a month or so out, with three weeks to print, a week of travel, the books show up on time, I load them in a bag and fly to DC. If they don't, I'm walking into that reception empty-handed. There's a decision gnawing at me too. Do I ship the boxes straight to the venue or to my house? I don't trust a hotel with a pile of books I haven't even seen yet. I want them in my hands first. And here's the part that's actually keeping me up. I don't have time for proofs. None. What if I write the book I publish, I'll have zero idea what the cover is going to look like when it lands? I'm literally going to be sending a book to print blind. So I start hunting. I look at publisher after publisher. I am Googling hard. I stack up turnaround times against my calendar like puzzle pieces. Most of them want weeks I don't have. And then I find one. hit my window. So I make the call. Bookship to my house, not the venue. I'll carry them myself. Fast forward, I finish writing. I hit publish, and I place the order. No proof, no preview, just trust and a deadline. It's days before we're about to get on the plane, and the boxes show up. I tear one open, and there it is. Matte finish. It looks and feels so premium. I can smell that new book glue. Packaging that is tighter and more polished than any book I've ever gotten from KDP. Relief does not

Unboxing Relief And New Logistics

begin to cover it. Now I've got a genuine logistics problem. There's a lot of books. So many that I need to stuff them in every carry-on and bring an extra bag just to get them through the airport into the hotel. At the reception, I proudly stack a chunk of them up on the table and then immediately realize I may have overshot. This is a cocktail hour, not a bookstore. There's no way this many disappear in one night. I catch the ordinance and ask, Is there any way I can leave the rest of these up front by registration? He says, Sure, go for it. But I don't want to be the guy standing next to an untouched stack of his own books. So I hold back. I leave a dozen or so out and haul the rest of them up to my room. The next time I pass the table, they're gone. Every one. That's the moment it clicks. Instead of dumping the whole stack at once, I start rationing it, replenishing the table in small batches over the next few days. Every time I restock, they're gone again within the hour. I keep doing it over and over. It's not just the first five people by the door who end up getting one. I want to spread it out. People start circling back, checking the table like it's an Easter egg hunt. By the end, I've given away every single copy except a small handful I kept in my bag for the most important one-on-one conversations. And even when those run out, I start telling people, I'll mail you a copy. The second I get home, I place another print run.

Now I keep a standing reserve of copies for every event I go to. Inside the book, there are tracking codes.
